A past as unique as Texas Located near the birthplace of the Texas Revolution, The Settlement at Patriot Ranch has a unique past. During the 1800s when Texas was still a part of Mexico and Indian raids were common, the Mexican government loaned Texas a cannon for protection. Several years later, during Santa Anna's rein over Mexico, Texas endured harsh new reforms, unfair laws and heavy taxes. As discontent rose, Santa Anna repealed the right to bear arms, which proved to be too much for Texans.
The residents of Gonzales answered the call by dispatching 32 sharpshooters to The Alamo. Gonzales was the only community to answer the call and the sharpshooters were later remembered as the "Immortal 32."
The Texas Revolution While the Battle of The Alamo was lost, it won the sympathy of Texans and gained support for the Battle of San Jacinto. It was at the Battle of San Jacinto that General Sam Houston led the Texans to win their independence in a crushing defeat of the Mexican Army. Gonzales's participation in the Texas Revolution has always been a great source of pride for the residents in the area.
